Ultrafast optical probing of electric field by means of electro-absorption (time-resolved Stark effect) was employed to investigate the separation distance between photo-generated charge carriers of opposite sign upon drifting in illuminated methylammonium lead triiodide perovskite (CH3NH3PbI3) insulated thin films.

In ultrafast electro-modulated differential absorption (EDA) spectroscopy, we investigate the picosecond screening of the electric field induced (Stark) shift of a materials absorption spectrum by photo-generated carriers. A femtosecond monochromatic pump pulse creates the photo-generated charge carriers, while a broadband probe pulse monitors the evolution of the Stark shift due to carrier drift and screening of the externally applied applied field.

We present the results for insulated CH3NH3PbI3 layers and estimate a mobility value of µ ≃ 6 cm2 /(V·s) from the observed field decay due to carrier screening. In addition, due to the insulating layers that prevent carrier extraction at the electrodes there is a growing accumulation of carriers at the interface. This manifests as a growing bleach signal that can be related to depopulation of trap states and carrier transport across the film.
